I’ve spent most of my life around motorcycles, performance, and pressure.
I began racing in 1996 and spent sixteen years as a professional motorcycle racer. I had a turbulent but successful run, winning races at national and British Championship level while narrowly missing out on a couple of championships due to my win-at-all-costs, crash-and-burn approach.
Motorcycle racing was everything to me. But like every professional sport, it comes with an expiry date.
By my late twenties, I’d already started planning for what came next. I’d always had a huge passion for training, so while I was still racing, I began studying sport and exercise nutrition and strength and conditioning.
In 2012, an injury forced me into early retirement.
Fortunately, the next chapter had already begun.
A few years earlier, riders I’d competed against had started asking for help with their training, nutrition, and race preparation. Word spread, more riders came on board, and that work eventually became The MAD Academy, a service specializing in motorsport athlete preparation.
The premise was straightforward. Motorcycle racers don’t need generic gym programs or copy-and-paste nutrition plans. They need preparation built around the physiological demands of the sport and the realities of performing under pressure.
The deeper I got into that work, the more obvious the gaps became.
Too many athletes were training from proxies, fueling from online calculators, and following plans that looked convincing on paper but had little connection to what was actually limiting their performance.
So physiological testing became central to everything we did.
Before COVID, I regularly sent athletes to universities for metabolic testing. Then the pandemic temporarily shut those doors. The racing carried on under controlled conditions, which meant my work did too. Riders still needed programming, and proper programming still required more than educated guesswork.
I completed a postgraduate diploma in exercise physiology, bought a metabolic cart, and started testing my athletes myself.
At first, it was simply a way to support the riders I was already coaching. Then athletes from outside the academy began asking for testing too, so I opened a lab in North Yorkshire and Metabolix was born.
For the first time, I could objectively measure where someone’s physiological thresholds sat, how they used fat and carbohydrate across different intensities, and what their training and nutrition should actually be built around.
It changed the quality of the decisions we could make.
But it also exposed another problem.
Even the best physiological assessment is still a snapshot. It tells you what someone’s physiology looked like on that day, under those conditions.
Then training changes. Fatigue accumulates. Fueling shifts. Sleep gets worse. Life interferes.
The test may have been accurate at the time, but the person it described was already changing.
That was the limitation I couldn’t ignore.
We had become very good at measuring physiology, but we were still doing it intermittently. The information was highly valuable at the moment it was collected, then gradually became less representative as the athlete adapted.
I started asking a different question.
What would it take to keep an athlete’s physiological profile alive, continually refining it based on how that person trains, fuels, recovers, and responds over time rather than simply retesting it every few months?
That question became YNSYGHT.
YNSYGHT uses lactate-informed physiology as its anchor, then combines it with ongoing training load, heart rate, recovery, environmental conditions, and performance data to build a model that evolves with the athlete.
It isn’t designed to treat a single test, metric, or wearable score as ground truth. It is designed to interpret those signals together, account for their limitations, and express how confident it is in the conclusions it reaches.
The aim is simple: better decisions from physiology that remains relevant.
In one sense, YNSYGHT is the next evolution of Metabolix. In another, it is the system I wish had existed throughout my career.
I’ve been the rider trying to perform.
I’ve been the coach trying to make the right call.
I’ve been the physiologist trying to turn data into something useful.
Now I’m building the technology that connects all three.
And yes, I’m still fast on a motorcycle.
